Vibrant, passionate, energetic and adventurous! Those are just some of the words that can be used to describe local fusion rock outfit Wanted Symphony. The band brings together a variety of influences and a whole lot of fun. Wanted Symphony definitely is a promise of something fresh – Together, they dabble in a genre they like to call ‘experimental fusion rock’. The band writes, arranges and produces their own music – uniquely characterized by a creative mixture of sounds, solid musical composition and strong lyrics. In the process, they have had the privilege of churning out crowd favourites such as ‘Breathless’, ‘More Than This’, and most recently ‘Reality’. The band performs live regularly and has rocked the house down on numerous occasions with their electrifying performances. Having already chalked up countless shows and feature performances nationwide, Wanted Symphony has been blessed with a TV appearance as finalists on a reality show sponsored by Coca-Cola. Aside from that, they were also interviewed and featured in local newspapers Kosmo! and the News Straits Times. Another one of their hit songs ‘Without A Trace’ has garnered rave reviews from listeners and sat comfortably at the number one spot on local radio chart Traxx.fm Upstage for three consecutive weeks. In 2011 the band was voted as one of the Top 3 acts in conjunction with Celcom X-Play and also recently enjoyed a Top 5 finish in the prestigious Magnum Passport to Fame Battle of the Bands 2011.
Amidst all of that and despite having fun enjoying what they do, more importantly Wanted Symphony aims to touch and impact people with their music. As lead singer Daniel Wong puts it, “Our aim is not just to make music that people can remember and enjoy, but above everything we seek to speak into the hearts and lives of our listeners with our songs and the words that we sing, in the hope that people will go home carrying a positive message to their family and friends.” With the release of their much awaited debut single ‘You Will Be Mine’; which has even hit radio airwaves in the Phillipines, Wanted Symphony now sets their sights on scaling greater heights. The band is just getting warmed up – there is much more to come so make sure you watch out for them!
Dhol Federation & their beats
“The federation now has around 45 students of all races, from all over the country, showing that music, and in particular, drumming, really breaks down the barrier of race and caste, bringing all of us closer. We hope to expand our classes to the whole of Malaysia and expose the whole country, if not the world, to the art of dhol drumming.”
The Malaysian Dhol Federation artfully combine traditional dhol beats with modern music- guitarists, a jazz drummer, a keyboardist and a tabla player- churning out some old school funk, jazz, rock and dance numbers, combining them with the sounds of the dhol.
They’ve collaborated with R&B artists and have been featured on local television and radio shows as well- clearly the audience’s favorites as they moved and danced to the ferocious drumming and rhythms of the group. Recent community involvements included the “One World Beat project”, for the poor children of the world, in the hope of totally eradicating poverty and “Drum Circles”, aimed at bringing people from different ethnic backgrounds together through the beat of the drum.
